2013 Gold Award Winner – Rev. Dr. Cerwyn Davies

There isn’t a person connected with the Welsh community in North America that doesn’t know the name Rev. Cerwyn Davies. Since he and his family arrived here in 1963, he has served the Welsh community in various capacities in Canada and also in the United States.

Cerwyn is probably best known as the longest serving minister of Dewi Sant Welsh United Church, Toronto, during which time he was also the President of the Ontario Gymanfa Ganu Association and the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu of North America. Because of his eloquence in the pulpit, he is much sought after as a preacher, and has been guest preacher at five National Cymanfaoedd. We look forward to hearing him on Sunday morning at the 2013 National in Toronto.

He is Master of Ceremonies and banquet speaker par excellence, and likes to expound on the contribution of the Welsh in North America in general and Ontario in particular. And who better than Cerwyn at Nosweithiau Llawen and other “fun” evenings?

Cymanfaoedd Canu are his favourite events, however, and he has even been persuaded to conduct a couple!

His skills as composer and translator are legendary! Merched Dewi are highly indebted to him for his many contributions to their repertoire. He contributes to Ninnau and Y Gadwyn, and is often called on by BBC Cymru.

The “boi bach o Twfftwn, Sir Benfro” is known as “Cerwyn o Ganada” when he dons his white robe at Gorsedd Beirdd Ynys Prydain. He was chosen to lead “Cymry a’r Byd” at the National Eisteddfod, Fishguard in 1986.

A truly worth winner of the 2013 Gold Award. Llongyfarchiadau, Cerwyn.
